The tribal aesthetic of a gang of clothes-obsessed, second-generation Milanese teenagers, Paninaro is a key trend for spring/summer 2011. Nearly 30 years after first appearing on Piazza San Babila, the values of the well-dressed collective are making a comeback: the worship of "hero brands", the veneration of heritage Americana and a near-heroic level of narcissism.
The inception of this movement came in Italy circa 1985, where Milanese rich kids congregated in large, lawless groups and set about attempting to outdo each others' style. These millionaires of tomorrow hung out not in bars and clubs but in the sandwich shops, cafés and burger joints of Milan.
